so hmmmm....if the banks don't want to sell at 'fire sale' prices why don't THEY just hold to maturity?

i'm willing to go along with suspension of mark to markit rules, so they can avoid their write downs.....but of course we can make a decision as investors the value of their toxic waste....why are they holding a gun to the head of the american tax payer to buy them NOW?

Exactly. If this crap is as illiquid as the claim it is, a reverse auction is the best price they deserve. Any price is better than they deserve, actually...
