As far as I can tell this isn't the end but somewhere nearer the beginning. The drip-drip-drip also hurts confidence.

As I understand this, this money is going to shore up paper, not real assets but paper. This makes this significantly different from the Resolution Trust Corporation and much shakier. In addition, the way it was presented by Paulson, this could also include non-mortgage problems as well as problems in foreign banks.

If I understand this correctly, this is like shoring up the Ponzi scheme instead of getting rid of it and shoring up real assets. The FDIC could come under tremendous pressure and that is worth shoring up with US taxpayer monies.
