US House passes credit card reform bill, Senate passage debatable

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed legislation that would limit surprise interest rate increases and fees for credit card users, but the bill faces an uncertain fate in the Senate.

Congress, which could adjourn as soon as Friday, has spent this week tackling the Bush administration's $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan.

The legislation, known as the Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Act, has drawn the strong support of consumer groups and vigorous opposition by the banking industry.
