Elmat, I have contended repeatedly that the US is headed for a fiscal crisis even if the shlock and awe plan proposed by Paulson and Bernanke does not pass.

If it passes [it will in some form or other], the fiscal crisis simply gets put front and center. At least I hope so.

The real crisis is a more silent one but no less deadly. It deals with the utter inability of the GOP to rein in government spending. What a disgusting mess of governance we have gotten out of it - I'm saying this as a card-carrying Republican!

As the shlock and awe spectacle is displayed, in the background lurks a 1/2 trillion budget deficit which is also being considered.

I am actually heartened by this favor Paulson and Bernanke are doing us as I think that it will have the effect of concentrating JoeSixPack's attention on the huge debt load the US carries and will carry if unfunded liabilities such as Medicare and others are allowed to fester.

Perhaps, just maybe, the plan proposed by Paulson and Bernanke will have the beneficial effect of having us all pay attention to the debt problem, which would be enormous even if shlock and awe were not on the table.
