Kennedy/Johnson lost all the southern racists with their civil rights legislation, to their credit. The (R)'s eagerly adopted them and the former "solid" (D) south became the solid (R) south.
(R)'s have stood for racsim and exploited it ever since.

Except for two, all the bigots stayed in the Democratic party - Carter's still a Democrat, Clinton's mentor Fulbright never left the party, Robert KKK Byrds still a Democrat.
