The normal procedures for the conduct of a debate is to allow surrogates to speak when a candidate can not be present for whatever the reason. This is routine in local and State elections in Virginia. If the candidate themself does not appear, they often take flack from the opposing party as McCain is already taking because of his putting responsibiities in the Senate above the campaigning. I've never seen a debate in which surrogates were not allowed to participate. Certainly, I see no reason that Obama should oppose having Sarah Palin as McCain's surrogate for that one debate or any surrogate that McCain would designate. Have written rules been published for the debate before now? mj
