This is the result of vectoring forces, many recent, some a century old. The proximate cause of a looming financial collapse is failure in management of a fiat currency. This failure came despite best efforts of brilliant and dedicated public servants. They have been operating where the navigational charts available have had too many areas with the annotation There Be Dragons . Part of that failure resulted from attempting to accommodate misguided congressional mandates that I and my predecessors didn’t adequately battle and expose. These cumulative failures weren’t caused by evil leadership. Rather by those who had forgotten or never knew our Founding Principles. We forgot that government is a necessary overhead, but not the source of prosperity or civility. That instead comes from hundreds of millions, who govern themselves mostly well, interacting in unknowable billions of free transactions. Allowing a sudden correction would be too horrendous to contemplate. All I can reasonably promise is to work with the House and Senate to bumble our way toward allowing the necessary corrections in an orderly manner. These corrections will be painful, but must be done. At the end, hopefully, we will have a system where sharpsters can’t game the system to accumulate vast fortunes taken from the rest of you. And you will be able to resume the upward march where your recompense is in accord with your contributions. The reasoning behind these brief statements is not now widely familiar. In my short time remaining I will use the Bully Pulpit to try to reacquaint you with sound ideas, largely lost. I call upon the community of journalists to present those thinkers, living and dead, who explore the benefits of a free society. Only when the electorate can make a comparison between competing visions will they reach informed decisions. I further ask tha **BANG** Dick Cheny: “Oh my God! Oh my” **BANG** **BANG** Nancy Pelosi steps to the mic, tears streaming. “We’re at last in charge. All will be well by weekend next.” (wild applause)
