It's never happened in our country's history - even during wartime. But then again...we've seen a few 'firsts' with these guys. I'd put nothing past Cheney, especially after the past week. The country is split 50/50 between the Dems and Repugs. A good number of right wingnuts would be happy to sacrifice another piece of the Constitution so long as it meant Obama wouldn't get in. A large part of our population is TV/Potato Chip Nation. They have no sense of history or civil rights. Threaten to take away their text messaging and they'll lay down w/o any fight. There are something like 25 million immigrants. None of them would do a thing. Lots of very old people who just want to reach the finish line.... The thugs in Washington have used the Cold War, the War on Drugs, War on terrorism, cultural wars (i.e. "values"), etc. to make us fearful of our neighbors. If they can whip up enough fear, I think people might sit back and let the govt. do what it said it needed to. You'd have to have one MAJOR trigger, though. EDIT: Let me add - I just returned from two and a half years in South Asia. I worked in Cambodia for a while. Hun Sen has ruled unchallenged for years. In none of those countries are there fair and free, democratic elections. Liberty is much scarcer and more fragile than most Americans can conceive.
