That bigs the question, and assume that this bailout plan will actually be of serious pragmatic benefit, when it may well be the opposite.

Could be, or maybe it makes no difference at all. But the decision should be made on pragmatic not idealistic grounds.

We are in uncharted territory so there are certainly going to be unintended consequences. The one thing that seems very certain is that global credit is shutting or is shut down... and the world economy runs on trust/credit. Paulson is right we are precipitously close to 'the great unwinding', and if that takes place we are very fuked.

So the 'do nothing' approach doesn't seem to be an alternative.
