"What else can they give, they know it's the first time most of their audience will have seen or heard them."

Yes, there is that. I would have preferred something that had a whiff of leadership about it, from either one.

I know I'm not going to explain this well (what else is new), but if I'm applying for a promotion I want my resume in order, my hair combed neatly and my tie unstained. They both pass.

One of them will be president. He will appoint and consider and preside, and we will bumble along. I had hoped for more, despite that being unlikely. I had hoped that Obama would say, for instance, "Yes, I was wrong about the surge. Despite my misgivings we seem to be making progress....". I had hoped McCain might have said "We will work to clear the credit markets through free market mechanisms. This will be painful to everybody but is needed to get the financial sector on sound footing....".

Instead we got "I was against the Iraq war from the beginning, mumble, mumble, mumble, nice smile." (Whew, I didn't mess up the English on that one, vote for me, vote for me, vote for me). And "The economy is in a very serious condition, and I will bring my considerable leadership experience to bear, insuring that mumble, mumble, mumble, silly grimace that looks like a smile." (Hope that Ted Kennedy thing didn't look too an contrived and out of place. Vote for me, vote for me, vote for me).

To avoid disappointment, have no expectations.
