The Verdict is my favorite of Newman's films. I like the story of personal redemption in his realization that he had been overcome by the bottle, and his epiphany in the hospital room while he was taking pictures of the victim and suddenly recognized that she wasn't a dollar sign but a human alive but deprived of life. All enhanced by Jack Warden who I thought was one of the great, gritty character actors. I love the exchange when Warden told him that the opposing attorney was Ed Concannon. "He's a good man." "A good man? He's the Prince of Fucking Darkness! He'll have witnesses testifying they saw her water skiing off Marblehead last summer!"
