I don't know why SS gets shoved into entitlements as it is simply a required insurance policy. If we did exactly the same thing for Medicare, we would have nationalized health insurance almost immediately.

McCain wants to tax the average $12000/family employer paid health insurance and offset it only somewhat by a maximum $5000 tax credit. That's a heck of a tax increase. In comparison, it would make sense to outlaw private insurance and have everyone go into Medicare.

With the addition of a much larger, much healthier population coming from a hugely inefficient private health insurance system, Medicare would be in much better shape and we would immediately get rid of the half of all bankruptcies due to medical bills. That is a public economic good.

IMO, health care is about to blow up on us within the next half decade or so. It is going to be 20% of GDP which is absolutely ridiculous.
