So you pay them for something they promised and didn't deliver?

This is an employment contract, not a contract for a specific single job. Basically what they promised to deliver was to show up to work.

If someone hired at McD's burns all the burgers all day long, he still gets paid for the time up till the point where he is fired. Its the same with these people, except these people didn't just have hourly wages, but also contracted severance packages.

The fact that so many people did such a lousy job with such large contracted severance packages, may work against packages this large being commonly available in future contracts. Hopefully it will. But either way the employer has to honor the contract.
