Some things that single payer can do well:

- stop us from subsidizing other countries' drugs. We pay more than anyone on top of subsidizing basic research for drugs. We subsidize other countries which have aggressive cost reduction policies. We OTOH have made it illegal for government to negotiate drug prices...WHAT?

- put medical information into a database to prevent medical mistakes and reduce paperwork costs.

- pay services providers easily so that they no longer spend up to 1/3rd of their time arguing with insurance companies and filling out endless forms.

- stop bankruptcies due to medical bills. Stop frauds like Healthnet from cutting off paying customers when they actually get sick.

- stop using ERs at outrageous costs for basic medical care for the under and uninsured.

Our per capita costs, even when we don't cover all the capita, are outrageously high and the rate at which they are growing is out of sight. Insurance premiums have doubled this decade and this decade isn't even over.

This is a difficult deal. Too bad we can't include it on top of the financial bail out of Wall Street. Apparently we need crises to get big things done.
