Gold just comes down to simple supply and demand
People want more of it than they have in the past and there just isn't enough of it
Everything else can go down because nobody wants or needs it

gold jumped from $20 to $35 when Roosevelt inflated in one fell swoop, we are just seeing Bush et al do it in slow motion ... gold $2000 when everything else goes in the toilet very possible if rest of world decides gold is intl currency instead of dollar

not too sure 'bout $40 oil & $2000 gold but $40/$850 very do-able, like $12/$260 in '99 ... 40/1000 in inflationary depression quite do-able IMO

I am not an expert but in the depression gold did go up. Apparantly it was regarded as a safe haven. No different than Treasury bills dropping to under 1% recently.

Probably moot anyway, because I think we will have massive inflation. It is just a matter of time before the government figures out that they don't need the banking system to print money. When the pain starts to be felt by households that did not take crazy mortgage risks and there are a few riots, things will change, maybe not for the better.
