After 8 years of Reagan? Hardly a forgone conclusion. Dukakis led by double digits in the summer, until he started running a really bad campaign in the fall.

This is debatable and, in any case, it’s extraneous to the assertion you made that the VP candidate doesn’t matter.

The salient point is that Bush Sr. would likely have had a better outcome with someone other than Quayle on his ticket.

I felt it was a combination of a weak candidate who exposed himself in the heat of the campaign combined with an MSM that wasn't as openly partisan in those days.
