I've seen quite a few analyst models, and generally their written reports are "deterministic", meaning that they have a bunch of inputs and assumptions about the future that produce a certain result.

While they may well do a lot of "what-if" or even stochastic modeling to evaluate the sensitivity of their results to the various input assumptions, you rarely see the results of that work published.

Typically in what they publish they play it "safe" on assumptions so "surprises" are generally to the upside.

They seem to prefer that to being dead wrong as they were with RIMM's last earnings.
