I could write several paragraphs on what led to this mess, starting with the dot-com boom, but even then I would probably paint an inaccurate and incomplete picture.

Suffice to say that the whole issue over low income homeownership was not the cause. Instead, that was just politicians trying to get their constituents to hop onto the real estate boom. No doubt this helped exacerbate the problem, but there is no way in my mind that the real estate boom was solely fueled by it.

And going all the way back to Carter for a root-cause would be useless because you'd have to ignore an extra two decades of world events and variables just to find something, anything upon which to pin the blame.

This is all IMHO, of course.
