Mark-to-market is being blamed by many for this disaster and they're wanting to do away with it. Which is a mistake, I think.

When you're dealing with capital assets, you generally don't market to market but when you're dealing with stock-in-trade, M/M is crucial to prevent the hiding of losses.


As I understood it, mark-to-market has to do with valuing futures and commodities in the stock market, not the housing industry.
