It is a difficult thing to assess. I opened a new account at a bank today and inquired about a car loan and a home equity loan. I wasn't interested in borrowing money I just wanted to find out if they were lending. The manager indicated that she would be happy to lend me up to 80% of my homes value and give me a car loan. I could write a check against my credit card for $30,000.00 tomorrow if I chose. However I had two clients lose their credit lines from one of the problem banks, even thought they had impeccable credit, and growing earnings. My gues the problem banks are not lending, but others are, if you have good credit.

Also, I have a client in California who purchased a 600K home and took a 320K mortgage. He has plenty of income to cover the mortgage, but his home is now worth $300,000.00. He was prudent but he got caught. I am concerned that this could turn into a contagion that affects all or most of us.
