Oh.............too bad. I thought the economic comments were rather strong, but I don't study GB politics much. Should have suspected something when I noticed the article was from CBS.

This is the smarmy letter I received from my congressman in reply to my email. Naturally, the dear congressman doesn't take any responsibility for the "deficit spending that has been so damaging to our economy in the last eight years."

Think I'll write him back and point that out to him. Giving a few suggestions regarding the "root of the problem."

Dear Mrs. XXXXXXX:

Like you, I am outraged that reckless and irresponsible conduct has put us in this terrible position of economic uncertainty. Your concerns as well as the convictions of my conscience convinced me to vote “no” on the recent economic package presented to Congress.

Over the past week, I have heard from many of my constituents who are alarmed by this proposal and have shared with me alternative options and ways to improve this legislation. As you know, the original proposal from the Bush administration was arrogantly unaccountable to the taxpayer, did not provide for Congressional oversight, included absolutely no equity stake for the taxpayer, and no help for struggling homeowners. Like you, I hoped the revised plan would address these inherent flaws. At the end of the day, this plan, while somewhat of an improvement over the original, did not include sufficient protections for the taxpayers and homeowners and other provisions that I believe must be included to actually improve our economic situation.

Regrettably, this plan is a continuation of the same type of deficit spending that has been so damaging to our economy in the last eight years. Any plan we consider should ensure that taxpayers are not be made to clean up after Wall Street’s party, and sound economic policies must be implemented to help dig our way out of the economic downturn. The failed proposal did not provide meaningful protections for the taxpayer. We need to take a long and hard look at how Wall Street got itself in this pickle and establish regulations to prevent another party on the taxpayer’s dime.

In addition, I am a strong proponent of growing and diversifying our economy in new markets with tangible assets like clean energy, rather than relying too heavily on one market for our economic stability. Our heavy investments in the real estate market created a bubble which all of us have felt the effects of for some time now. I would also like to see legislation that addresses the root of the problem, which means addressing the needs of primary home owners that are struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes.

As we all know, we are facing unique economic conditions, and I will continue to monitor our financial health and act in your best interests. Thank you for standing up and making your voice heard on this important issue.

Please continue to contact me about the issues that concern you, as I both need and welcome your thoughts and ideas. I encourage you to contact me via email, telephone, or fax, as security measures in the House cause delays in receiving postal mail.
