Why don't we tax humanist societies while we're at it.

I'm all for it.
All the organizations should be treated alike.

If the government seems to think one or another is doing an especially good job it should pass a specific and public bill allocating funds to finance it.

Even the humanist tax-exempts are mostly a way to preserve family control over wealth for multiple generations. I don't think that is a goal the taxpayers should be forced to support.
