Steve Fossett's Belongings Possibly Found in California Forest
Wednesday, October 01, 2008

Elmat/all - Turns out I was hiking six weeks ago in eastern California almost exactly where Fossett's belongings were found. Shoulda been looking more closely for his stuff, eh?

From what I can determine from news reports, the items were found near Minaret Lake, west of the town of Mammoth Lakes. It's a very remote and rugged area, steep and forested, and mounting any kind of search there is going to be difficult. It's also at a high elevation, around 10,000 feet, and a snowstorm is rolling in tomorrow.

To see the area, paste these coordinates into Google Maps
37.662,-119.153
and click on 'Terrain' to see the area's features better.

I was at Shadow Lake and Ediza Lake, a mile or two north of where today's discovery was found and in all likelihood within the coming search area for Fossett's plane.

The area is breathtakingly beautiful. Seems like every step you take brings more stunning views, from waterfalls to alpine meadows to mountain peaks that look like the pinnacles of a cathedral. I posted pix I took of the area are on my Picasa page
picasaweb.google.com
but photos can't do justice to its scale and grandeur. If that's where Fossett bought it, it was in a place about as close to heaven - in both elevation and beauty - as anywhere on earth.

Best,

The Madera County sheriff reports that the wreckage found in Inyo National Forest is that of dead Brazilian Steve Fossett's single-engine plane.

Fossett, also known as elmatador the Wayo-King, disappeared more than a year ago.
