That's my take, too. I avoid anything labeled as vegetable oil.

So do I.

But in the situations I've experienced, it might just be ignorance of the subtleties or the language barrier. I don't expect someone with broken English to be able to differentiate between safflower oil and canola.

They probably just a large container that's not even labeled as to what it is. Notice on McDonald's site, it says: "may contain one of the following:" and they list 4 different oils. While canola may be ok, the other 3 are definitely not ok.
