Tuesday October 21 5:40 PM EDT Company Press Release China Launches Nationwide Paging Network With Glenayre Infrastructure CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:GEMS) announced today the activation of its high speed paging systems in eleven provincial capital cities for the public launch of China's Nationwide High Speed Paging Network. Operated by China's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPT), the new FLEX(TM) network officially launched on Oct. 1, and is now delivering advanced numeric, alphanumeric and roaming services nationwide. ''This momentous project allowed Glenayre to showcase its advanced technology and provide its expertise as the leader in FLEX and narrowband PCS paging infrastructure,'' said Jim Marion, president of Glenayre's Wireless Messaging Group. ''Working with MPT, we have delivered the very best system for China, which is now the world's largest paging market. In the last five years we have supplied over (300) systems throughout China, and this nationwide project reinforces Glenayre's position as the world's leading supplier of paging systems.'' ''China's MPT set high performance standards for this network -- it is clearly the most advanced paging network in the world,'' said Lee Ellison, Glenayre's senior vice president of global operations. ''With the most advanced over-the-air protocols, network protocols and switching technology, the network sets an industry standard and greatly advances wireless communications in China.'' To meet MPT's needs for the FLEX roaming network, Glenayre implemented many advanced features, including the ability to change coverage areas instantly or at a scheduled time on a nationwide, province-wide, or local basis. China's network is the world's first to provide FLEX roaming, which is made possible by the Inter-switch Paging Network Protocol (IPNP). Based on Glenayre's WMtp inter-switch protocol, IPNP was developed jointly by the MPT, Glenayre and Motorola as China's nationwide networking standard. Currently supporting FLEX pagers, the GLENAYRE networks are fully upgradable to support narrowband PCS protocols including ReFLEX. The eleven GLENAYRE networks represent half of the 22 provincial networks of the first buildout phase. The networks are located in Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Harbin, Fuzhou, Jinan, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and Haikou. Glenayre will continue to work with the MPT in building out the network and developing additional features and functions. MPT plans to eventually expand the network to approximately 300 cities. The features available in eleven MPT networks operate on Glenayre's GL3000 Wireless Messaging Switch, GL-C2000 Controllers, N2000 Network Managers and GL-T8321 Transmitters. The world's leading switch for paging and narrowband PCS, Glenayre's GL3000 recently achieved an industry first by transmitting 2,000 pages per second -- a ten fold improvement over any throughput levels previously seen in the industry. This dramatic increase provides greater throughput, improved traffic handling capacity and ultimately allows operators to generate more revenue.
