With regards to the context - defending the Constitution - he is on record as saying that his primary job is to keep America safe. That is not, in fact, his primary job. His primary job is to defend and uphold the Constitution.

In difficult times, especially with the threat of a devastating terrorist attack, someone with a primary mandate to protect the people might conclude that reducing the freedoms of ordinary people would help in matters of security. Someone might argue that, for example, tracking the internet usage of all citizens would be a prudent means of identifying potential terrorists.

But, the primary responsibility of the President of the United States is NOT to keep us safe - it is to ensure our freedom. That seemingly small difference is in fact extremely important. The President must keep us as safe as possible while maintaining our freedom and preserving the Constitution.

Bush's policies with regards to the War on Terror - not Iraq - show his lack of understanding as to his true role in our republic.
