I think the 1900 storm is something every child needs to know about. It's the worst disaster in American history so far as loss of life and property. There are several towns inland that were totally wiped off the map and never rebuilt because there was no one left to rebuild. The official death toll was reported at 6,000. However, many historians in this area dispute that number and said there is no real way to know exactly how many souls were lost that day. Some estimates have it closer to 8,000.
