The biggest problem with capital gains taxes (and taxes on interest and dividends) is that they are not indexed for inflation.

If you make 50K on your job, that's 50K more than you had.

If you make 50K from a 500K stock investment you made 3 years ago, you made nothing but get taxed as if you did.

The rates should clearly be lower until they are indexed for inflation.
