Like McCain, Thomas is a former Navy officer. They're about the same age, and Thomas considers himself a political independent with a conservative bent.

The south is full of people who claim to be conservatives and are Democrats. They used to be yellow dog Democrats. Then they became blue dogs. Now that most of the south have switched to Republican they often claim to be Republican. Lots of politicians in that camp as well.

"Does she have as much experience as I would like for a vice president? No," said Republican Dave Shultz, a real estate agent from Warner Robins, Ga. "But I do think she could handle the job if it were dumped on her."

I worry that the above it the true prevalent sentiment. Any fool can see she couldn't handle the job if its "dumped on her". They know she's not ready but they want a Republican in the WH.
