I thought Palin's first half hour of the debate was pretty effective. She was nervous, but that is not a bad thing and to be expected. She clearly had her talking points and was going to answer some question with them, perhaps not the question that was asked...but she got em in. She was very prepared and stayed in her comfort zone. As the debate wore on I think Biden got stronger and he certainly made his points later in the debate and he closed pretty strong. I was a little surprised by Palin on civil unions. I see the CNN poll had it 51-38 for Biden. The Fox text in poll went the other way (surprise!). Palin did pretty much as I expected. She is not an idiot, just out of her league. Does the folksy "shout outs" and references to hockey moms really work? They were obviously not spontaneous but planned phrases, but maybe that kind of informality is powerful with some. She is certainly appealing on a personal level, more than Biden I think (although he had his emotional moment and it was pretty well done.) Palin helped herself tonight for sure. Did she change any undecided voters minds? I doubt it. So now we put the two VP candidates on the back shelf, worry about the House vote tomorrow and get ready for McCain/Obama round two on Tuesday.
