I understand on some level, not the same... but enough that I appreciate your impassioned inclusion of gay rights in your comments. No, it's not the same. And we are still moving beyond it here. The scars are deep here, but something about the sickness of the LAW of it and the signs... white people here have, for the most part, changed a great deal. Maybe more so than people who could hide behind a 'pretend' acceptance. I know some older people who still don't 'like' blacks, but not one who doesn't feel guilty. There are some young white racists, and the men from the old days dismiss them as trouble-makers without intention beyond making trouble. Guilt must eventually pass if the right things are being done. And scars eventually fade enough if the right things are being done in the present. How else to move beyond? or something like that. where's my banjo?
