NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Greece's government will guarantee all bank deposits in the country, Reuters reported Thursday, citing an unnamed, senior finance ministry official. Greek laws currently guarantee deposits of up to 20,000 euros, the report said. Also Thursday, the Greek finance minister, George Alogoskoufis, said that the banking system is completely safe, according to the report. "In recent days some citizens, influenced by unfounded rumors, showed nervousness as far as our country's banking system is concerned," the finance minister was quoted as saying. "Greece's banking system is completely safe and solvent and I want to emphasize that citizens' deposits in all the banks that operate in the country are absolutely secure."

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The boards of directors for the UBS U.S. Money Market Funds approved the funds' participation in the Treasury's Temporary Guarantee Program, said UBS Global Asset Management (UBS) on Thursday. The company said the funds continue to operate normally and maintain a stable net asset value of $1 a share. However, it decided to participate in the Treasury's plan to provide an added level of protection for shareholders, it said. The Treasury launched a program to insure holdings of any publicly offered money market mutual fund that pays a fee to participate. The program, which is in effect for the next year, provides coverage to shareholders for amounts that they held in participating funds as of Sept. 19.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Monsanto Co. (MON) said Thursday it raised its outlook for 2008 because of strong performance in its herbicide and seeds businesses. Monsanto said it now expects ongoing 2008 earnings in the range of $3.64 a share, and reported earnings in the $3.59 range. In September, the company had estimated ongoing 2008 earnings in the $3.58 to $3.60 a share range, and reported earnings in the $3.49 to $3.51 a share range. Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research estimate 2008 earnings of $3.49 a share.
