Does it surprise anyone that the hypocritical advocates for full disclosure by our public corporations are so opposed to full disclosure by hedge funds? After all, their secret strategies have apparently included front running, sell and distort, extortion of ceo's, purloined FBI data, coordinated buying and selling, etc.

Nah - no need to disclose or leave trails for the authorities to investigate. Just grab those wallets, hold head high, one hand on nose, and have minions post about how "cyber-sleupps" and short sellers are always right.

S.E.C. officials on Thursday refused to comment on the change. One person familiar with the matter said the commission could still require disclosure of short positions in a final rule but there would probably be enough of lag, perhaps 45 days, to ensure that the data would not compromise a hedge fund’s intellectual property.

So.. I guess Mutual Funds will now have the right to stop disclosing when they add to their positions?

What's next? Getting rid of SEC 13g filings?

If you've borrowed stock from the broker, you're on margin. And if I'm not mistaken, margin accounts are reportable and regulated sector since the margin rate is set by the Federal Reserve. I see no issue with forcing them to disclose their short positions.
