I have the DVD of Open Range, which includes a "making of" feature. Costner was suffering from appendicitis during the filming. The pain showed through his face, and it added a lot to Charlie's character. Costner was actually quite ill.

That "making of" feature gave me a lot of respect for the movie making craft. It takes hundreds of people to make a movie.
