Joe; A doable scenario, Apple down in the mud with the Wintels, grunting away in dire competition. If their OS is superior and price competitive with Win95 running on WIntels, Wamds,Wcyrixes etc and offers what Apple user are used to(ease of use and connectivity compared to the unwashed W***s), APple may start to grow again.

Hi Joe.: Not a rumor but the justification to purchase of NeXT

Know you knew it, but evidently John Dvorak has discovered history.

Amelio and Hnacock after announcing AAPL's plan to purchase NeXT cited the INTEL component and speculated on AAPL's OS(s) running there .

Mr. J completed the Windows component which Dr. Gil has recently claimed was based on his prior efforts .

The Costelo move is confusing as Mr. E called him a moron though they had become civil to each other recently .

Mr. Miliken's involvement with AAPL board member Ellison is concerning . Leopards don't lose spots but jailbirds can lose stripes . Hope their hearts are in the right place in their educational venture .

Jim K.

Dvorak may have triped over something but his continued ignorance should give investors pause. The "spin" of a clandestine alliance with an NT "kernal" and MS dictating terms for "clones" is pure junk! Apple is porting the MacOS to Rhapsody's Mach 3.0 kernal. This permits easy ports to other hardware...such as Intel. But it also allows them to port it to Digital's, including StrongARM's new 300 mhz chips for portable NCs. Sure, having OSes running on Intel boxes would give added credibility in the WinTel world. But abandoning the PowerPC architecture which will outperform Intel boxes for the next 2 - 3 years is crazy! Will Merced be a success? Rhapsody will be ported to it and Apple may well contract for branded servers using Intel processors as a "wedge" product for IS departments. A "secret" aliance with Microsoft is pure "Soap Opera Speculation"!
