Hypo Real Estate - i owned the predecessor a long time ago. Depfa Bank. it was a solid institution (partly state owned) doing public issuing bonds for for municipals /(german) states etc. Then they become an Irish company to escape the regulation and they started to do business all over Europe and also the US. At this point I sold as their business became less transparent to me. Then they got together with the mortgage arm of Hype Real Estate (itself a product of two Bavarian banks with a RE focus). now they are apparently going under. Some of the institutions that became Hypo have survived 2 Worldwars and the total destruction that followed, Hyperinflation, the crash of 1929 and all that. They did not survive too much leverage. Very sad.
