i say they let it test the 2002 lows before they intervene.

why?

if you knew earnings were going to really suck for the next six q's, why would you want to inflate the market for no good reason.

and what if you did inflate the market? what good would it do if the banking system is locked.

so let the market go, and focus on the banking system.

plus they have learned, congress caves in a whole lot more when something scary happens. letting the market go down another 20 percent would be scary good for paulson and company.
