no arms transactions till 1985

North was dealing with the Iranians as early as 1979 as part of the "October Suprise" strategy of Reagan. The deal was made to delay return of the hostages until after the election. At that time they had to fund the weapons with private donations from right wing radicals. By 1983 Ollie was dealing so many weapons to Iran that he had to set up a separate bank (Palmer National Bank )to handle the transactions. After those weapons were used to kill 241 U.S. Marines in Lebanon, Reagan put Ollie in charge of the investagative team to find out what happened. Naturally they didn't seem to find his fingerprints on the operation.
