"No, I'm just making the obvious point that that if one doesn't know what the questions are it hardly helps to memorize some answers as you have suggested Palin did in preparation for the debate."

It is pretty obvious that is exactly what she did. When a question was asked that she didn't have a memorized answer to, she then didn't answer that question and merely parroted a canned answer to some other question. As a result, she probably didn't answer half the questions she was asked. To be fair, Biden did that on a few questions himself. But not nearly as many by a long shot.

"The reality is that anyone going into one of these debates has a pretty good idea what questions are going to be asked"

Palin apparently didn't. Else why did she dodge so many questions?

"But when you appear before a town hall, you have no idea, whatsoever, what you're going to be asked."

I don't see it. Townhall questions are pretty predictable. People tend to ask questions about things that matter to them. Jobs, the economy, taxes.
