Senator Frank? - Politics - Representative Barney Frank may run for position in Senate

Bill Ghent - April 29, 2003

The first-ever openly gay member of the U.S. House of Representatives is thinking about being the first-ever openly gay member of the U.S. Senate. Democratic representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts said he might take s stab at the senate if current senator and Democratic presidential aspirant John Kerry wins the chief executive's job or becomes vice president.

"If the Democrats are still in the minority [in the House] I am very likely to run," Frank said. "Even if you're in the minority in the Senate, you have much greater control over public policy than you have in the House."

If Frank does run, it won't be until 2006. Kerry must first win a bid fir the White House next year, and then Republican governor Mitt Romney would appoint someone to fill the vacancy until 2006.

"I can tell you right now it looks like a possibility, but in 2006 it could be a sure thing, a sure-not thing, or somewhere in between," Frank said.
