I think the bulk of their wealth is in their home. I know mine is. I'd say that is true of most middle class families. If you were smart enough and lucky enough to have bought in a relatively prosperous area that also happens to be strikingly beautiful, like where Todd and Sarah Palin live, it helps. I'd wager their home's value has been reduced due to what's happened in the housing market, so their net worth could have actually gone down as a result. I know mine has.
