Problems with Freddie and Fanny are not at the center of the crisis where banks won't loan to each other. Any mortgage troubles they had were being taken care of. It might have become more difficult to get a poor mortgage, but that would have mainly affected the same poor people you want to see suffer anyway.

The actual flashpoint may have been triggered when some bad mortages made claims against their insurance, but the crisis occurred when those companies, and every other company with loan backed securities, realized that the insurance policies were worthless.
