Yes the payback will be fast, especially in California since the state also subsidises quite a bit and they get more sun down there than up here in Seattle. If you designed the system correctly I'm guessing that you would have a 8 year payback and then all of your power is free. (You could still net meter and sell the excess to the local utility!) It definitely adds to the resale value of your home.

But the average American only stays in his home 7 years or so.

I intend to stay where I'm at the rest of my life.
