To me, something as mundane as how one finances his or her education is off-limits, because that's just digging way too deep in mundane matters. You can argue that for the highest office in the free world, everything ought to be a matter of public record, but if that's the case, why not also investigate all of the schoolyard fights Obama got himself into when he was growing up?

And what's the motivation for digging so deep? To find something, anything with which to nail Obama? Take a step back and see what is already known about Obama without having to dig so deep. Is that sufficient to make a judgement about him one way or the other?

The problem is that there is so much that is not known about him.

If we had a huge body of knowledge, for example, as we did with Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton, then minor points like the financing of his education would be unimportant.

But in Obama's instance, he is an unknown. He showed up on the public scene less than four years ago. Do you know of a legitimate presidential candidate about whom we've known so little?

When you don't know anything about the candidate, the little things become important. How did he finance his education? What about that thesis on the Cold War, what did it say? What was his position on it, and why is it not available for public inspection? Has he ever engaged in illegal activity? Who does he associate with? All highly relevant material.

If he's arguing this, why doesn't he insist McSame release his hidden military and medical records?
