One of the huge holes in our medical system is that preventive care is at best marginalized. There just isn't enough money in it for doctors and hospitals. It would be nice to see some low cost clinics set up throughout the country for exactly that purpose, and just pass sicker people on for further care if and when necessary.

Karen,

Thanks for the post. I'm not going to be able to give a really full comment--I'm in Texas visiting friends and relatives through Sunday. So I don't have time to do more than skim the thread in the evenings.

As for my desire to have Medicare for everyone, I see the problem you bring up. A couple of comments about it. I don't think Medicare is perfect. It certainly needs to do a better job of coverage. I see Sam brings up the bit about preventive medicine. I agree. The second comment is that Medicare for everyone would be only a beginning in two senses--it's better than what exists for a lot of people and any government policy would need to be supplemented by one's own insurance policy, if you could afford it.
