There's nothing "Republican" or "Democrat" about the cause itself.

Andrew Carnegie once said, "A man who dies rich dies disgracefully." Annenberg was approaching the end of his life and likely decided to simply donate to worthy causes without regard to partisanship. Probably decided that the locals would know how best to spend the money, even if they turned out to be Chicago ultra-liberals.

Wouldn't be the first time a huge sum of money backed by good intentions got wasted by usurpers with their own radical agendas.
