koan, my German friend wrote me today (sic):

I intently follow the candidates' debates and involuntary slapstick scenes of former Miss Alaska. Mon Dieu. I'm afraid to say so but things like that only can happen in the States. The face, the appearance, the hero's history (McCain), noisy meaningless John Q. Public comments elate the masses.

She goes on to say that Obama and the Democrats are the lesser of two evils, in her view.

It's all too true, unfortunately.

She also explained how German voting works -- you get two votes, one or a candidate and one for a party, e.g. you might vote Obama/GOP to balance out the gov't, to force a coalition so that ...[the electee] never can turn into a sovereign.

Not that we need any advice on how to structure a gov't, ours is a model for the whole world to behold. And we'll soon have a division of the military parading around the US to prove it.
