What grounds me with Senator Obama

How we respond to smear and how we act while doing well are important. I truly believe that the means are as important as the ends, and if we want to sustain the changes that will hopefully come about in an Obama administration, it is critical that we work, speak, and act in the next 30 days with grace, vision, inclusiveness, and humility.

We all have our reasons to be nervous, negative, hopeful, prayerful, or whatever about the upcoming election. For me, when I hear Obama speak and when I hear what he chooses to speak about and what not to speak about, I remain incredibly gratified that he is a man who believes that the way in which you pursue your goals is as important as achieving them. This differs radically from McCain, Bush, or even the Clintons, who saw the acquisition of power as the goal, and the means to get there didn't matter much. From a policy point of view, I understand such an approach because you can't make new policy if you don't hold office. But as someone who, like all of you, believes that we have a moral and ethical responsibility to ourselves and our children to live each day and make each decision in ways that are in and of themselves honorable and justifiable, I can appreciate Obama's desire to live the change that we seek. And I think in this election, such an ethical approach will actually carry the day for once. McCain's current unraveling regarding all the lies and unjustifiable smears are the result of focusing on the power rather than the path to acquiring that power.

Personally, I am a Professor and when I took the Professor position, I pledged to myself that I would not sacrifice my family for my job. That if I couldn't live the life I wanted and get tenure, then perhaps the job was not the right one for me. That I got tenure (yeah!), while not sacrificing my family, makes the promotion to tenured Professor that much more rewarding and gratifying. This is how I view Obama's campaign. Listen to his speeches and his community events. He is a respectful man, knows why he us running for office, and chooses to run a campaign in a way that brings honor each day to all of us.

In this last month of campaigning, there will no doubt be ugly mud thrown our way. How we respond reflects on how we will lead and bring about lasting and positive change.
