Well, we would have but Bush used the consumer to buy our way out of a recession; it was a reasonable answer to our problems then; but it , as in so many other cases , was not executed carefully after a while and ,then, down the road , Bushes erratic and strange fiscal policy follow-ups led to the massive deficits. Then, his administration's careless handling of the economy has been the prime cause (not the only cause) of this extreme crisis we are in right now. Ownership society BS. I will admit that the Dems were not crystal clear in this and may share some of the blame, but not much; it is the executive branch encouragement of cowboy behavior which led to the excesses we are now all paying for.
