Bay makes play for big business

It's not just a network anymore.

Bay Networks (BAY) will place its stake in
the ground today as a provider of
network-based software services for
enterprise business applications based on
IP, the dominant communications protocol
for the Net.

The next battleground for inter-networking
companies such as Cisco Systems, 3Com,
Cabletron Systems, and Bay will not be
based solely on a pure speed argument
about how fast a particular piece of
hardware can zip data packets to their
destination.

I love the way they knock 56K saying you can ONLY get an average of 40K. It's STILL a hellava lot faster than 14.4 or 28.8. Let's get our priorities straight Keynote.

''Even though your car can go 65 miles per hour on multi-lane freeways, your average speed during rush hour will be far slower,'' said Jim Barrick, President and CEO of Keynote Systems. ''You won't get to your destination any faster as long as freeway on-ramps, off-ramps, and interchanges are congested. On the Internet, rush-hour conditions occur all the time.''

I'll STILL take a Ferrari or some tasty American muscle car over a VW ANYDAY.
